Officers from the attached agencies of the department of tourism – the National Parks Development Committee and the Intramuros Administration,

Friends and colleagues in government,

It has been a remarkable year for Philippine tourism.

From January to August this year, the Department of Tourism recorded a total of 5.55 million foreign tourist arrivals, a 14.08% increase from the 4.87 million tourists recorded over the same period last year.

The DOT and its attached agencies are pleased with this growth, as it inches us closer to our target of 8.2 million foreign tourist arrivals for 2019.

Today, I am proud to say that tourism is an important driver of economic growth. It took a lot of hard work to get to where we are, but we at the DOT have been encouraged by the support and cooperation from stakeholders in the private sector as well as the local government units in the implementation of our sustainable development programs.

As we formalize the agreement this afternoon between Smart Communications with the National Parks Development Committee and the Intramuros Administration for the provision of Wi–Fi services in the major tourism destinations of Intramuros and Rizal Park, as well as the development of an Intramuros app, it solidifies the strong partnerships the DOT is forging with the private sector, as we align toward a common goal–the creation of better value and travel experiences for all.

Here, we are enhancing connectivity and accessibility, two important buzz words that will enable the DOT to realize even greater contributions to our economy.

We extend our gratitude to Smart Communications in partnering with the NPDC, the agency tasked to operate, manage and administrate the Rizal Monument Complex, and the Intramuros Administration, the agency that manages this historical and cultural treasure and ensures that the proper development perspectives are in place.

As Intramuros and Rizal Park get connected to the digital world, we ensure that our visitors' experience is enhanced not only by greater connectivity, but also by making information that will be of interest to them easily accessible; through this, we hope they can be convinced to perhaps stay a little bit more and truly enjoy the rest of our unique and wonderful country.

Congratulations, everyone, and our sincere gratitude to all.

Mabuhay!
