MAKATI CITY, PHILIPPINES - The provincial governor of Aklan Florencio Miraflores, in behalf the of the stakeholders, presented their Pledge of Commitment to Task Force Save Boracay in a bid to address the pressing concerns of the island.

The local stakeholders wrote to President Rodrigo Duterte to show support and appreciation of the national government's efforts to rehabilitate the island.

Speaking in front of the inter-agency task force represented by Secretaries Wanda Tulfo-Teo of the Department of Tourism (DOT), Roy Cimatu of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Miraflores echoed the sentiments of the stakeholders.

"We are one with you in the need to balance tourism development with environmental protection and preservation. We recognize the fact that the status of Boracay as the premier destination of our country can only be maintained by the conscious and determined efforts of all stakeholders to immediately undertake the necessary mitigating measures to resolve the critical environmental problems arising from the rapid and unregulated growth of our local tourism industry," part of the letter read.

These include mitigating measures to address sewerage and drainage, solid waste management, demolition of illegal structures in forest lands, wetlands and easement areas; completion of the circumferential road and decongestion of traffic.

Stakeholders also initiated self-demolition of establishments violating the 25+5 easement rule, reclamation of the sidewalk on the main road and remove illegally parked vehicles.

Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo lauded the efforts of the local government and the island's stakeholders, "We welcome the initiative of Governor Miraflores to fly here to Manila to personally meet with us and present their plan of action for their beloved Boracay. The pledge of commitment, if carried out according to schedule, would serve to shorten the duration of the rehabilitation."

Activities for some of the problems had already started and are ongoing while others have yet to start immediately, with the latest date of completion estimated in September.

The 42 signatories of the letter include tourism industry associations, other business groups and local government units. Among these are the Boracay Foundation, Inc., Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Boracay and Kalibo, the various local executive leagues, labor groups and other stakeholder entities.

Meanwhile, the Task Force will await the President's decision on the island's timetable for rehabilitation.
